Unlocking SaaS Growth: Mastering Partnership Cohort Analysis

2 min read

What Cohort Analysis Has to Do with Affiliates

Cohort analysis groups customers by a shared starting characteristic — typically the month they signed up — and tracks their behavior over time. SaaS teams use it to measure retention, LTV, and churn. But you can apply the same lens to your affiliate channel: group customers by which affiliate referred them and compare their downstream metrics.

The Right Question to Ask

Most affiliate dashboards answer "which affiliate drove the most signups?" Cohort analysis lets you ask the better question: "which affiliate drove customers who are still paying six months later?"

A high-volume affiliate who sends 200 signups might look impressive, but if 180 of them churn in month one, the economics are poor. A niche blogger who sends 20 signups with 90% month-six retention is far more valuable.

How to Build an Affiliate Cohort View

You need two data sources: your affiliate platform (which affiliate referred each customer) and your payment platform (which customers are still active). With Trackli connected to Stripe or Paddle via webhooks, both live in one place.

Export your commissions data filtered by affiliate. For each affiliate, calculate:

  • Month 1 retention — what share of their referred customers paid a second month?
  • Month 3 retention — who's still active at 90 days?
  • Average MRR per referral — do they send free-plan or paid-plan signups?

What You'll Typically Find

Audience alignment is the strongest predictor of LTV. Affiliates whose content closely matches your ideal customer profile tend to send customers who stay longer. A developer tools affiliate promoting a developer-focused SaaS will generally outperform a generic productivity blogger, even if the blogger has ten times the audience.

Using Cohort Insights to Improve Your Program

Once you've identified high-LTV affiliate cohorts, invest in those relationships. Offer higher commission tiers, co-create content, or give them early access to new features they can review. De-emphasize or offboard affiliates whose cohorts churn quickly.

Over time, this optimization compounds — your affiliate channel gradually shifts toward partners who send customers that stick.
